Data Story Summary

Using the graph from Google Trends, we can see that the data tells a story about the correlation between the videogame Fortnite and sports in general. Sports have been around for a very long time and are obviouly not a new concept, so they have had a consistent amount of attention on the internet ever since sports were able to be viewed online. On the other hand, Fortnite is a fairly new game as it was released in late 2017, but from the graph, we can see that as Fortnite exploded in the beginning of 2018, it quickly passed sports in popularity. However, most videogames have a popularity trend of growing exponentially near its release and then peaking at a certain point. Once videogames reach their peak, they slowly go down again as excitement dies off and usually do not come up again to such a high populatity. Although Fortnite has had an unsusually high amount of players and viewers, we can safely assume that it will generally follow the same pattern as every other videogame. This trend it already showing in the graph as Fortnite has peaked in March 2018 and is now going back to a relatively close level to sports. Therefore, despite the fact that Fortnite has lots of attention, it will eventually die down as other games are released and peoples' attention is turned elsewhere. So - to the relief on many people - the consistency of sports will eventually end out on top again in the long run because Fortnite is just another videogame.
